Speaking the Truth in a World Full of Lies

By: Obeten Okoi Oka, PhD

Preamble

In a world where deception and falsehoods have become the norm, speaking the truth has become a rare and courageous act. As Christians, we are called to be bearers of truth, shining a light in the darkness.

The Importance of Truth

In Proverbs 12:22, the Bible says, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are truthful.” Truth is a fundamental value in God’s eyes, and it is essential for building trust, respect, and strong relationships. When we speak the truth, we reflect God’s character and demonstrate our commitment to integrity.

Challenges in Speaking the Truth

Speaking the truth can be difficult, especially when it goes against the prevailing narrative or challenges the status quo. We may face ridicule, rejection, or even persecution. The fear of consequences can silence us, causing us to compromise on our values. However, the Bible encourages us to be bold and fearless in our witness. In Acts 4:29-31, the early Christians prayed for courage to speak the truth, and God gave them boldness to proclaim the Gospel.

Biblical Guidance

The Bible offers guidance on how to speak the truth in love.

  • Paul, the Apostle instructed the Ephesians, and in extension, all Christians today to “speak the truth in love,” while Colossians 4:6 encourages us to “season our speech with salt” and speak with grace (Ephesians 4:15).
  • “Jesus said to the people who believed in him, ‘You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'” (John 8:31-32)
  • “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are truthful.” (Proverbs 12:22)

This means communicating the truth with kindness, respect, and compassion. We must also be mindful of our motivations, ensuring that we speak the truth to build up, not tear down.

Epilogue

In a world full of lies, speaking the truth is a revolutionary act that can bring transformation and hope. As Christians, we are called to be agents of truth, reflecting God’s character and values. May we find the courage to speak the truth in love, even in the face of adversity, and may our words bring life, hope, and redemption to those around us.
